Nothing is Permanent

Today was hard! I rolled out my mat ready to practice but my SI joint and low back were acting up. It’s funny, when one part of my body starts to feel better another starts to act up. Life likes to throw those curve balls at us, doesn’t it?!?

I tried everything I could think of to get things to shift back into place and stabilize so the pain would go away. But my body just wasn’t having it. So, I backed off, finished up my practice, and moved on with my day.

Was I always like this? No. There were times when I would have pushed myself as hard as I could, increasing my pain until I felt absolutely terrible. But I’ve learned over many years of practice how to lower my intensity and be more consistent. I now choose to practice in a way that will allow me to practice again the next day, the day after that, and the day after that.

I think it’s important to recognize that not every day is going to be great, regardless of what it is we are doing. Not every time you show up on your mat will things happen or feel the way you would like them to. But we still show up every day because it’s just part of who we are. You really can apply this sentiment to any habit you can think of.

Progress is never linear. Life is rarely easy. Nothing is permanent; the one thing you can always count on is change. And while it matters what you do on the good days, it matters even more what you do on the hard days.

I don’t know what my practice tomorrow will bring., But what I do know is that I’ll still show up. Because it’s the good times, the bad times, and everything in between, that help create resilience and discipline and help us grow (traits that are applicable off your mat too!). There is a reason this is a lifelong practice.

As John Hawkins said, “if success were easy, everybody would do it.” Keep showing up, keep doing the thing, keep growing.
