Ashtanga Yoga

I have been practicing Ashtanga yoga since 2002. Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic, flowing style that connects the breath, the body, and the mind. This method follows a set sequence of postures that students learn at their own pace. Ashtanga is known for helping students develop self discipline. The practice is physically challenging, which helps to keep the mind free of distractions and creates a moving meditation.

Ashtanga often gets a bad rap for being a dogmatic and rigid practice. I have practiced through many injuries and illnesses and have always found ways to adapt the practice to meet me where I am. I teach the same way I practice and make this practice accessible for anyone curious and interested in learning.

pranayama

I have been practicing pranayama since 2010. Breath is fundamental to sustaining life. It is an involuntary process that we only pay attention to if something is wrong. The yogis say that all beings are given 100 years of life. How long that is is measured by how many breaths you take—the slower and longer your breaths, the longer your life. When we learn to control our breath, we can also learn how to manage our nervous system and create greater vitality. Pranayama helps improve digestion, strengthens the cardiovascular system, deepens sleep, increases mindfulness, improves lung function, and helps to reduce stress.

meditation

I began practicing mindfulness meditation in 2018. Mindfulness meditation helps you pay attention to what is happening in your mind. It teaches you how to slow down and live your moments as they happen so you don’t waste time living in the past or the future. You are estimated to have around 60,000 thoughts a day; over 90% of them are on repeat. When was the last time you even noticed that? Mindfulness meditation helps you to create more awareness around these thoughts so you can begin to change them and let go of the ones that aren’t serving you. You can’t change what you don’t even notice. We do this practice without judgment but try to cultivate kindness, compassion, and curiosity.

These three practices have given me tools to deal with my stress, overwhelm, and anxiety. They have also helped me to cultivate more kindness, compassion, joy, and resilience. I have navigated significant illnesses and injuries by using these practices. In doing so, I have learned so much about my body and myself. I can meet myself with kindness and compassion rather than criticism and judgment. I have learned to focus on what I can do rather than what I can’t.

I can take all I have learned to support you on your journey.
