New Year New You? No Thanks

As we head into a new year the slogan, New Year, New You, seems to pop up all over the place.  On the surface New Year, New You seems encouraging, motivating, and uplifting. The question that always enters my mind is what’s so wrong with me in the first place? I’m not broken, so why do I need to be fixed?

New Year’s Resolutions are tough. People usually set very lofty goals for themselves. The goals are usually so big that they won’t see the results they are looking for quickly. As January moves into February the motivation that they started with begins to wane. Then there is a missed workout or an overindulgence and willpower starts to disappear. We fall right back into our old habits and get discouraged.

We all want to feel good in our own skin. We all want to see results from changes that we make in our lives. You don’t need a new year to decide to do something different. You can start anytime, even today. You don’t need to set unrealistic goals for yourself. The best way to create change in your life is to create lifestyle change. It isn’t pretty, glamorous or fast, but it sticks. It is the small things you do everyday that help you develop habits that will serve you for a lifetime. As James Clear says, “All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision.”

So this year, let go of the New Year’s Resolution. If you are ready to make a change pick one small habit that you can work on. It can be anything, like drinking more water, but it has to be small. You want it to be so small that when you think about it you know you can do it. Once you become successful at your first small habit you add on the next one. Once again, make it smaller than you think it should be. It is the success of small daily habits that produces transformation that lasts.
