Easy Is Sustainable
When we first start a new habit it requires us to be somewhat rigid. We need to be specific with the time of day we are going to do it as well as how long so we can hold ourselves accountable. Because we are creatures of habit, we can continue to be rigid with our habits even after enough time has passed that it has become a non-negotiable.
One of the things I have learned over the years with daily habits is that they can (and will) morph and change and still be effective. Allowing ourselves some freedom is what helps create sustainable habits. What I needed when I first start a habit is not necessarily what I need 5 or more years later. For example, when I first started practicing yoga, I felt like I had to practice 2 hours + a day and if I didn't I would feel like I hadn't really practiced or I was selling myself short. Now, I can practice for whatever amount of time I have available and still feel totally satisfied. Today’s practice is done in a way that I will still be able to practice tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that, etc.
On the other hand, when I first started a daily mediation practice I sat for 5 minutes a day. Now, I find that I crave longer sitting practices and aim for about 25-30 minutes a day.
My daily practices are really about finding that deeper connection with myself so I can feel grounded and present. They ask me to be flexible and open so that I can see what is sustainable and what I need.
Adrienne Maree Brown said, "Easy is sustainable. Birds coast when they can."
So often, we make even the best habits harder than they need to be. We put so many expectations on ourselves of what we think we need to do and who we need to be. Sometimes we need to take a step back so we can see if it is time to change our habits up a little. Maybe that means being open to less or to more or being open to what is really serving us and what isn’t.
Are you rigid with your daily habits or have you found more ease and flow? Can you drop the expectations and meet yourself where you are?
