What I learned from using the Insight Timer app

If you’ve been in my corner of the world for a minute, you know that I carve out time to meditate every morning. Usually, I sit down, put on a timer, and try to get quiet.

I love that time to myself first thing in the morning. It’s so quiet, in my house, and sometimes in my mind. 😂

Every now and then a meditation teacher I like will run a challenge. The number of days they run the challenge will vary, but they guide you through your meditation each day.

It can be so helpful, especially on the days when I feel distracted or tired, to have someone walk me through the meditation and help keep me present. There are also lots of good tidbits of information that I haven’t heard before or maybe I forgot.

A couple of weeks ago, when I had covid, I was feeling like I needed a guided meditation. I was so tired and just wanted someone to walk me through it.

I have an app on my phone from one of my original teachers, but I’ve listened to it a lot and wanted to explore other teachers. So, I downloaded Insight Timer. It is a meditation app that allows you to listen to a guided meditation or you can set a timer that will ring when you start and again when your time is up so you can do it on your own.

I found some of my favorite teachers and started doing their guided meditations. I’ve gone back and forth between guided and nonguided meditations each day.

I wasn’t paying attention to how many days I had used the app. After day 10 it showed a message that I had received a milestone. It was helping me celebrate the fact that I had used the app and meditated for 10 days. It made me feel really good. I also found myself wanting to use the app every day so I could continue to have support and accountability.

It reminded me that we all like to have accountability and support, no matter what we are working on. We, as human beings, tend to focus on what we do wrong or where we fall short. So, having someone, or something, that reminds us where we’ve been successful and helps us celebrate our wins is a gift.

I think that’s one of the reasons coaching is so effective. It’s partially because people have autonomy over their life and decide what’s best for them. The other part is accountability, knowing someone is cheering you on and there to help support you is invaluable when you are trying to change things in your life.

Change is hard, so knowing you have someone on your side, no matter what, who will celebrate your success and help you learn from the moments when things didn’t work out, well, there’s nothing better.
