You Don't Have To Go It Alone

Mental health is a huge part of living a healthy and balanced life. It can impact how we feel, think, cope with stress, relate to others, and the decisions that we make.

When you are dealing with autoimmune issues your mental health is often impacted immensely. For most people being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease can take weeks, months, or even years. You are battling an invisible invader and often you will hear doctors tell you that they can’t find anything wrong with you.

Many people I know have been to multiple doctors before they finally received a diagnosis. Often, unless you have autoimmune disease, it is hard to understand the frustration and hopelessness that accompany it.

I can’t tell you how many times I had people tell me, “Everyone feels tired, just drink another cup of coffee.” What no one understood was that no matter how many cups of coffee I drank or how many hours of sleep I got it would not make a dent in the amount of fatigue I was having. I spent many a day in tears just trying to figure out how I would make it through my work day or scared that I was going to fall asleep while I was driving my young daughter around. I felt like no one understood. I felt alone.

When you don’t feel well and you add the fact that no one (except others with autoimmune disease) understands what you are going through, you can begin to feel depressed and isolated. Most of my clients have gone or are going through this. It can be scary to think that you might always feel this way. I can tell the sense of relief they feel when they know that I understand where they are.

Having someone to talk to who has been where you are can be life changing. More often than not we keep our issues to ourselves, not wanting to burden anyone else with what we are dealing with or to hear another well meaning comment that cuts deep.

Luckily, I had a good friend who understood exactly what I was dealing with. She also had autoimmune disease, had been where I was, and could help guide me. She helped me to see that it wasn’t always going to be like this and that one day I would feel better. She recommended doctors, naturopaths, books, etc. With her support I began to heal my body but also my mind.

The good news is this can be you too! You can start your journey to wellness with the support you need. You don’t have to feel overwhelmed or lonely.
